Itron Named in 2021 Gartner® Market Guide for Meter Data Management

January 05, 2022

As a trusted, proven leader in meter data management (MDM), Itron manages data from more than 50 million meters across 106 energy and water companies on six continents.

Itron Enterprise Edition Meter Data Management (IEE MDM) is a meter data management system (MDMS) for smart utilities and cities around the globe with an enterprise-wide, highly-scalable MDMS architecture. The solution provides interval, register and event data for residential, commercial and industrial customers. IEE MDM is part of the IEE suite of products, which supports a variety of analytics use cases, as well as customer engagement and curtailment management. In addition to the metering functionalities, IEE MDM provides data analytics reporting capabilities and offers enhanced capabilities to manage settlement data.

We are excited to share that we were recently cited as a Representative Vendor in the Gartner Market Guide for Meter Data Management (login required), which provides insight into the MDM market as well as on MDM solutions providers.

Key findings of the guide include:

 • Metering has evolved from being a back-office component of revenue cycle processing (meter to cash) to an enterprise function that supports multiple use cases such as product innovation, customer segmentation and consumer/prosumer integration into energy markets. The trend toward smaller consumption intervals and more frequent meter reads opens the opportunity to use MDM data as a proxy for distribution SCADA to support network modernization initiatives.
 • The meter data management (MDM) market has matured, and it is becoming a replacement market. Buyers are now looking for extended capabilities, improved performance and composable architecture.
 • MDM is a vertical version of an IoT platform built specifically for commodity metering. MDM vendors are extending ingestion capabilities beyond meters to other types of sensors aspiring to become generic IoT platform providers, while IoT platform vendors are eyeing the utility market to verticalize their offering for utility needs.
 • Availability of accurate, low-latency granular consumption data ingested, persisted and disseminated by MDM is critical for utility digital transformation.
