Shining a Spotlight on the Women of Itron: Nichola Kendall
As we make our way through Women’s History Month, we are continuing to recognize trailblazing women at Itron. These women work every day to advance key initiatives, achieve desired outcomes for internal and external stakeholders and further Itron’s vision of creating a more resourceful world.
Today, we are excited to spotlight senior manager of procurement operations, Nichola Kendall! An esteemed procurement professional, Nichola brings deep expertise across six different industries, has consulted for multiple Fortune 500 companies and was the procurement lead in multibillion dollar sales initiatives for companies like Apple, American Express and more. While she’s achieved many impressive accomplishments throughout her career, her dedication to growth, leadership and collaboration are what we admire most about her.
If you haven’t already, make sure to check out our first two conversations as part of our Women’s History Month Blog series with Amanda Dixon and Maureen Mol.
Q: What does your average workday look like?
“My workday typically involves addressing supplier escalations; attending cross-functional team meetings; leading organizational development and coaching discussions; contract reviews and approvals; preparing presentations; responding to stakeholders’ requests and issues. This list is not exhaustive. I am typically double or triple booked in meetings from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and often have to prioritize which meetings require my presence.”
Q: What made you want to pursue a role in procurement at Itron?
“The way that Itron regarded their employees was truly attractive to me. Across the globe, we have wonderful people that work here at Itron, from the CEO downwards. Being a black woman, who is an immigrant, can have inherent disadvantages. Some may see this as a liability, but Itron has been the ultimate meritocracy. Itron’s embrace of diversity, equity and inclusion has allowed me to successfully navigate my career. Itron has also been an incubator of opportunities because they foster an environment for creativity and growth. This is another aspect of the company that attracted me to come onboard. Lastly, I get to collaborate with some of the smartest people at Itron.”
Q: Can you share about your role on the Inclusion and Diversity business council?
“Itron is one of 10 companies that are Premier Sponsors of the Southwest Minority Supplier Development Council. I am the Itron Procurement Representative on the Council. My primary purpose is to expose minority suppliers to opportunities at Itron. I also offer mentorship on topics such as navigating the procurement process and how to effectively respond to request for proposals (RFPs). My goal is to ensure we are being more inclusive of Minority Suppliers and taking a more active role in their development.”
Q: How have you grown and evolved as a professional since beginning your career?
“I have learned so much within my 20+ years in procurement. I have made many mistakes, but I have learned from those mistakes and that is the magic. Growth happens when you learn from mistakes. I don’t focus on the symptoms; I focus on the root of the problem. When one addresses problems, one develops trust and partnerships with their stakeholders.”
Q: What advice would you give other women who want to pursue a career in procurement?
“Go for it! Procurement plays an essential role in increasing our company’s profitability. We are responsible for ensuring that we remain competitive in an environment where costs continue to increase. We ensure our supply chain risks are mitigated by developing strong partnerships with the right suppliers. I believe women are strong, intelligent, compassionate, collaborative and critical thinkers. We need more WOMEN!”
