Itron Named a Visionary in the 2023 Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for Managed IoT Connectivity Services, Worldwide

March 29, 2023

Itron is excited to announce that we’ve been named a Visionary in the Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for Managed IoT Connectivity Services, Worldwide1. According to Gartner, “the managed Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity service market enables connectivity, data collection, and analysis and additional decision services that are necessary for connected solutions.”

Intelligent connectivity enables the digital transformation of critical energy, water and city services by leveraging a flexible combination of communications. Itron's globally proven, multi-purpose network platform securely connects millions of Industrial IoT (IIoT) devices around the world. With IIoT platforms suited for any combination of water, electricity and gas solutions, cities, utilities and critical infrastructure operators rely on Itron to help them deliver safer, more efficient, reliable and resilient services. Itron uses the best in-class communication technologies such as RF mesh, LTE, Private-LTE, fiber and more to deliver industry-leading performance with unmatched reliability. A futureproof and standards-based platform enables seamless coordination across a diverse ecosystem of IIoT industry partner solutions, enabling new services that provide lasting value to consumers.

Let’s take a closer look at a few of the cutting-edge applications we have available to support utilities and cities on the journey to building smarter, better-connected communities:

Enhance Performance with Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)
With more than 200 million connected devices across 8,000 customers in more than 100 countries, we’re revolutionizing our smart metering solutions to give customers an edge. Itron’s AMI solutions provide edge analytics, peer-to-peer device communications and decision making at every point of the distribution networks and meter systems. Our solutions also provide access to granular smart metering system data on a unified platform to drive better informed decisions, quicker response and more efficient operations, while adding applications over time.
For small- and medium-sized, and electric/combo utilities in North America that provide service to tightly knit communities, an AMI deployment doesn’t have to be a multi-year, functionally overwhelming and organizationally staggering experience. AMI Essentials for water and gas and AMI Essentials for electric/combo resources are Itron’s standard bundled AMI solutions, tailored to better serve small- to medium-sized utilities in the United States. Itron is committed to providing value to all of our utility partners regardless of size and where they are in the AMI process.

Unlock Efficiencies with Intelligent Streetlighting
To meet the needs of tomorrow’s smart cities, it’s imperative to implement a multi-purpose, standards-based network infrastructure and IoT technology platform to form the foundation for advanced measurement and sensing activities. Itron’s intelligent streetlight solution is empowering lighting departments from around the world to do just that – giving them the flexibility and control to unlock breakthrough capabilities. For the first time, lighting operators have real-time visibility across their city and can gather data to improve operations, predict future problems and experience up to 50% energy savings.

Reimagine Service Delivery with Smart City Applications
Itron’s networked solutions drive the digital transformation of services to enable cities and utilities to improve efficiencies, lower carbon emissions, create safer neighborhoods and enhance the quality of life for all citizens. Starting with a proven anchor application, such as smart street lighting, creates an underlying industrial IoT (IIoT) communication infrastructure for future use cases. This allows additional industrial IoT sensors and applications to be layered on that can ease traffic congestion, mitigate crime, enhance outage detection, accelerate emergency response and disaster restoration, and much more.

Overcome Low-Voltage Network Challenges
What used to be a one-dimensional flow of power from generation to customer homes and businesses has become an interactive, two-way transaction with more unpredictable variables than ever before. But with the right insights, in the right places, cities and utilities can monitor and control the low-voltage network to maintain grid reliability, resiliency and efficiency. That’s where Itron’s Optimizer portfolio comes into play, which includes the EV Charging Optimizer, the DER Optimizer and the Grid Edge Optimizer. These solutions run on distributed intelligence and our real-time vision technology platform and can help manage new variable grid assets, transform the low-voltage network and improve the return on infrastructure investments.

Optimize the Benefits of DERs
With rapid integration of renewable and distributed energy technologies onto the grid, cities and utilities are challenged with maintaining power quality, balancing supply and demand, and ensuring adequate distribution capacity. Itron’s distributed energy management system (DERMS) can do exactly that – and dynamically orchestrate distributed energy resource (DER) operations to deliver a range of load-shaping outcomes, from delivering aggregate firm load reductions to protecting vulnerable distribution infrastructure. Our mission is to help cities and utilities turn behind-the-meter DERs into valuable grid assets that deliver improved reliability, resiliency, customer engagement and sustainability.
